Renée is a witty and bold young girl growing up in 1970s Newark, New Jersey. Her father is her superhero, but when he takes off to rescue another family, leaving her behind, her life of innocence and naivety goes in an unexpected direction. She quickly finds that there’s a lot more going on in the world other than afro puffs and bell bottoms. Babies are having babies, milk cartons are plastered with pictures of missing children, and pedophilia is rampant. She trusts the older people in her life to mentor her in a positive light, but instead, she’s led down a dark, reckless path of broken promises, promiscuity, and soul-scorching pain.
